In the afternoon visit of a turkish bath (optional )The tradition of the Turkish bath extends far back, to a time before Turks had reached Anatolia. When the Turks arrived in Anatolia, they brought with them one bathing tradition, and were confronted with another, that of Romans and Byzantines, with certain local variants. The traditions merged, and with the addition of the Moslem concern for cleanliness and its concomitant respect for the uses of water, there arose an entirely new concept, that of the Turkish Bath. In time it became an institution, with its system of ineradicable customs.

For the Turkish bath was much more than just a place to cleanse the skin. It was intimately bound up with everyday life, a place where people of every rank and station, young and old, rich and poor, townsman or villager, could come freely. Women as well as men made use of the "hamam", as the bath is known in Turkish, although of course at separate hours. Dinner in Göreme, and overnight stay at your campsite in Göreme.

The calcium oxide-rich waters flowing down the southern slope of Caldag located north of the ruins have, over the millennia, built up deposits of white travertine on the plateau thus fully justifying both the site's ancient name of Hierapolis (Holy City) and its modern one of Pamukkale (Cotton Castle). The home of Virgin Mary on a hill top, where she lived out her days is now visited by over a hundred thousand pilgrims each year. The pilgrims drink the water of the sacred spring, meditate and pray for health at this ancient spot of worship. Both Pope Paul VI in 1967 and Pope John Paul II in 1979 have celebrated mass here. The next stop on our tour is the antik city Didyma.

Didyma

The Didymaion, the temple of Apollo and its oracle at Didyma, had a considerable reputation in the ancient times. German archaeologists excavating at the site have shown that the earliest sanctuary here was built in the 8th century BC and that it was enlarged into an enormous temple around 560 BC. After their bloody suppression of the Ionian rebellion, the Persians sacked and laid waste to Miletus (which they regarded as the instigator) and the Didymaion in 494 BC. It was during this assault that the temple's cult statue of Apollo was carried off to Ecbatana (modern Hamadan town in Iran). After Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 334 BC, the Ionian cities regained their independence and work was begun on reconstructing the temple of Apollo. Dinner in Selcuk, overnight stay at your campsite in Selcuk.

18th day: Dalyan, Caunos (incl. Boat- and Bustrip 12):

Trip distance: 290km / Total distance: 3995km
After breakfast we go to Dalyan via Söke, Didim, Milas and Mugla. We park the motorhomes at the campsite and go on a sightseeing tour. Boattrip from Dalyan to Iztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach) along the antik Lycian City Caunos. Founded around the 9th century BC, Caunos became an important Carian city in 400 B.C. Right on the border with the Kingdom of Lycia, its culture reflected aspects of both Kingdoms. The tombs, for instance, are in Lycian style.

When Maussolos of Halicarnassus was ruler of Caria, his Hellenistic influence reached the Caunians, who eagerly adopted the culture. This mixture of cultures in Caunos may be seen amongst the ruins of its various archaeological remains: the Carian city wall built by Maussolos, the Lycian and Carian tombs, the medieval walls on the acropolis, a Roman fountain dedicated to Vespasianus, a theater from the 2nd century BC, remains of 4 temples, massive Roman baths and a Byzantine basilica of 5th/8th centuries. A few kilometers from Fethiye, over the pine covered hills is the enchanting "ghost village" of Kaya Village or Kayaköy also known as Karmylassos and Levissii. Continuing to Kalkan Kalkan is a lovely small hilltop town that overlooks a tiny bay. Its quaint, traditional, white-washed houses, shuttered windows and balconies garlanded with brilliant flowers that cascade to the streets below, make it the ultimate in a peaceful holiday town in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Narrow winding streets lined with souvenir shops lead down to the charming marina. Dinner in Kalkan overnight stay at your campsite in Kalkan. Dinner in Kalkan, overnightstay at your campsite in Kalkan.

20th day: Kalkan Kas, Myra, Demre, Kekova (incl. Boat- und Bustrip 15):

Trip distance: 100km / Total distance: 4375km
Today we go on a bus and boat tours and visit Kekova Island, Simena, Demre, Santa Claus Church, the antikcity Myra, Kale and Ücagiz. Kekova Island and the town of Kale (ancient Simena) to the west of Antalya make an idyllic daytrip for the traveler looking for a combination of sunshine, swimming and fascinating historic ruins. Many boats run trips from Kas but the journey is much shorter from Cayagzi, the harbor of Demre. Along the stony coastline the boats may stop at a cave, or you can see the occasional goat or the smoldering pyramids of wood used by peasants to make charcoal, the product may sit in plastic sacks at the water's edge, waiting to be taken away.

Demre / Santa Claus Some people believe that Santa Claus did not exist but truth is that old Father Christmas did in fact exist as a historic personality. He did not come from beyond the North Pole where Reindeers roam, but lived under the warm Lycian sun as Bishop of Myra. His church and ex-tomb continue to exist as places of pilgrimage in the Turkish town of Demre (known also as Kale, near Antalya). Saint Nicholas was born in Patara, was elected bishop during Diocletian's persecutions, and died in Myra around the year 350. These stories of his charitable acts took on legendary dimensions during the following centuries.

Myra features some of the most impressive and well preserved Lycian monuments in the country. These include an excellent collection of rock tombs and an imposing 2nd century theatre. Many of the tombs have log cabin features carved into the rock, presumably reflecting the domestic architecture of the period. A few easily accessible ones have inscriptions in the Lycian language. Carvings above are mostly in poor repair but the overall effect of this jumble of the architecture of death is dramatic. Dinner in Kas, overnight stay at your campsite in Kalkan.

21st day: Finike, Antalya, Manavgat:

Trip distance: 280km / Total distance: 4555km
After breakfast we go to Manavgat via Kas, Finike, Kemer and Antalya. After we parked the motorhomes we visit the old city of Antalya. Farewell dinner in Antalya, overnight stay at your campsite Manavgat. Antalya, Turkey's principal holiday resort in the Mediterranean region (ancient Pamphylia), is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards, a prize-winning marina on the Mediterranean. In the picturesque old quarter, Kaleici, narrow winding streets and old wooden houses abut the ancient city walls. Lately, many foreigners have bought (and continue to buy) property in and around Antalya for their holidays or for the retirement. It became a popular area especially for the German and Russian nationals.
